Why can’t I find your products at traditional retailers?

Short answer: To keep prices reasonable for you.

Long answer:
The traditional retail model requires large markups (often around 70–80% of the final price) to cover costs like stores, marketing, and middlemen. This is easier to do when a product is mostly water (70–80%) in plastic packaging — since water is practically free.

Our products are the opposite: waterless and made with 100% active ingredients, housed in handcrafted terracotta. Applying the same retail markup to a formula like this would make the price unreasonable. Our serum would need to cost around 4,000 SEK to fit into that model.

That’s why we’ve deliberately chosen to say no to retailers and instead sell directly from our warehouse in Sweden — so you get the highest possible quality without unnecessary middleman markups.

I have sensitive skin, what if it reacts to the ingredients?

Sensitive skin is at the heart of how we formulate. Our co-founder Pavels Babnejevs has spent 25+ years developing natural products for sensitive skin for the European pharmaceutical market, and we use that standard for Oquist. We always start with sensitive skin first, which is why our waterless approach lets us avoid common triggers like preservatives, emulsifiers, alcohol, stabilizers, and added perfume. Formulas that are gentle enough for sensitive skin tend to be better for all skin types.

Even if your skin isn’t visibly reactive, repeated exposure to irritating additives can contribute to low-grade inflammation—often called “inflammaging”—which can accelerate visible aging over time. Our philosophy is to remove those stressors and rely on 100% natural, skin-beneficial ingredients only.

What does "waterless" mean and why is it better?

Waterless means zero water is added to the formula. Only about 1% of skincare is truly waterless; most creams and serums are 70–85% water—which functions as filler. Our Serum is 100% active: every single ingredient is there for skin health, never for marketing.

No preservatives or cosmetic “helpers”
Microbes grow where water exists. Water-based products need preservatives—plus emulsifiers, stabilizers, alcohols, and added perfume to keep texture fresh and scent pleasant. We avoid water, so we can avoid those common irritants entirely.

Will it clog pores for acne prone skin?

While many common oils and butters are indeed comedogenic (i.e. pore clogging), there are also those that are non-comedogenic. In fact non-comedogenic oils help clarifying the pores. Oquist's face products are made out of non-comedogenic ingredients that are suitable for all skin types, including acne prone skin.

I have dry skin, how will it get hydrated if there's no water inside?

A common misconception is that hydration comes from the water in water based creams. The fact is that hydration of the skin comes from water molecules in the air and from the water we drink and eat. It is then up to our skin barrier to keep this water balance. A disrupted skin barrier function is what leads to dryness of skin (and many other skin problems), so the priority should be getting your skin barrier and skin microbiome functioning again. The Serum is designed to nourish your skin barrier function while also giving it an immediate feeling of moistuire.

If there's no preservatives, wouldn't the Serum go bad very fast?

No—the absence of water is the preservative. Bacteria and mold need water to grow. Our Serum is waterless and 100% active, so it doesn’t require added preservatives (or the irritations they can bring).

Think of pantry staples like olive oil or honey: neither contains water, so they keep beautifully without conventional preservatives when stored properly. Your Serum behaves the same way—potent, stable, and self-preserving through the lack of water.

How long does it last?

Our waterless formulas can remain stable for several years unopened. After opening, we recommend using within a year for best freshness and performance.

By removing water, we eliminate the need for preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, and added perfume—common triggers for the aging of skin—while maintaining a long, practical shelf life.

Are your product Vegan?

Yes—100% vegan. We use no animal-derived ingredients, ever.

To be candid, “vegan” is the bare minimum for us. Many products can be vegan yet still rely on unnecessary additives that skin doesn’t love and nature can’t easily absorb. We go further:

Where are the products and company from?

Oquist Cosmetics Sweden AB is a Swedish company, run by daughter Olga Ringquist and father Pavels Babnejevs. Our production studio is in Riga, Latvia. Olga lives in Stockholm, Sweden and Pavels lives in Riga, Latvia.

Isn't terracotta very fragile and heavy?

Terracotta is not more fragile in breaking than glass, which is a common packaging material in cosmetics. Many interior refill hand soap dispensers are also made out of clay which should give you an idea of what it may be like. If nevertheless your Oquist packaging would break we will send you a new one.

How do I get the product out of the packaging?

We’ve all been taught that liquids need a pump. We disagree. Pumps add plastic, metal, and waste. Our terracotta vessel relies on the most elegant dispenser there is: gravity.

Dispense in 5 seconds

- Untie the cotton cord and remove the natural rubber stopper.

- Place a clean, dry fingertip over the opening to seal it.

-Turn the vessel upside down, and then back again.

- Lift your finger—an amount equaling a drop will end up on your finger.

How much for each use

Face (day/night): 3–5 drops

Eye area: use the leftover from face application (a tiny touch)

After shave: 2–3 drops over shaved areas

Is terracotta decomposable/biodegradable? - how do I recycle it?

Terracotta isn’t biodegradable or compostable, since these are processes only available to organic matter (ie living organisms like wood, fossil oil, etc). Terracotta comes from mineral clay — the result of geological weathering of rock — and when it’s fired, it simply becomes rock again.

Think of it as part of the earth’s own cycle: clay formed by time and pressure, then kiln-fired back into a stable, stone-like material. Because terracotta is more porous than porcelain or glass, it breaks into small rock/sand pieces faster through natural wear — but it doesn’t rot or leach.

What we intend (and recommend)

Refill and keep — our vessels are designed to live with you for years though our refill program.

Repurpose at home — as a sculptural object, vase, sugar dispenser, or keepsake.

If you still wish to part with it
Break the vessel into small pieces and return it to the earth. Over time, they settle back as small mineral stones and rejoin the ground naturally.

Recycling is only necessary for materials that are harming nature at any stages of its life cycle, which isn't the case for terracotta. We recommend the chapter Sustainability in our book Skin & Beyond for a deeper explanation.

Where do you source your ingredients from?

Our sourcing strategy is based on three main principles:

1. Quality

2. Sustainable and responsible raw material production

3. Using waste products when possible

We source our ingredients from well-known European natural ingredients suppliers. Ingredients that can be grown in non-tropical environments (such as sunflower seed oil, olive oil, apricot oil etc) are mainly grown in the EU (which ingredients we prefer, to avoid unnecassary CO2 emissions), while more exotic ingredients such as Shea Butter are responsibly sourced from Africa. We always make sure our suppliers have solid sustainability strategies, audits (for the plantations), and are certified in several organic, vegan and sustainability related categories.
